Basic tips before you begin
Check your exam schedule: refer to the schedule provided by your instructor or the one available on HEC en ligne. Your ZoneCours course site also displays the schedule in several places (Assignements, Calendar, Dashbord, etc.).
Check HEC en ligne to see if a room has been assigned for the exam. If so, your exam will be in person. You will therefore need to go to the classroom. Note: For students who are entitled to extra time, refer to the schedule you will receive by email rather than the one in the calendar on the course website.
If the exam is taking place in person, make sure you have tested your internet connection a few days before the exam, as no backup computers will be available.
If you are taking your exam from home:
Avoid having other people use the same network connection (downloads, online games, streaming videos, etc.).
If possible, use a wired connection.
Do not use a mobile device to take your exam.
Use the latest version of a supported browser: Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari. Also check that your devices' operating systems are capable of running these applications and that they are up to date. To check your browser's compatibility, visit this page on the provider's website.
Close all unnecessary applications on your computer. Only access the websites you will need during the assessment.
Avoid opening the same exam in multiple tabs in your browser.
Disable the sleep function during the exam, as it may cause anomalies and even disconnections.
Temporarily disable automatic updates during your exams. Some updates may take several minutes or significantly affect the proper functioning of the device.
During the exam: finding the qui
In your course site, click on the Assignments link in the course navigation menu. All available assessments will be displayed. You can filter them by date or by type using the buttons at the top right. If the Show by Date filter is selected, they will be sorted chronologically into groups such as: Overdue Assignments, Upcoming Assignments, Undated Assignments, and Past Assignments. The assessment with the closest due date will be at the top.
Click on the name of the assessment to be submitted to begin the exam.
Understanding the assessment summary on the Assignments page
On the Assignments page, each assessment displays its name [1], availability dates [2], due date (if applicable) [3] and the value of the assessment in points [4].
Informations
The small icon in front of the title gives you additional information about the nature of the assessment. In this case, the rocket is the icon for a quiz.
Availability dates and times [2]
The first date you see is the availability date. Sometimes you are asked to submit work within a specific time frame, so the availability date and time represents the period during which you have access to the work.
If the assignment says Not available until [date] at [time], this means that it is locked and unavailable until the specified date.
If the job indicates Available until [date] at [time], this means that it is available and you can submit until the specified date and time.
If the job has the status Closed, it means that it is no longer available and submissions are closed.
Due dates and times [3]
The second set of dates are the Due dates. Any assignments submitted after the due date are marked as late. If you exceed that due dates, you will have until the availability deadline [2] to submit the work before it changes to Closed status and submissions become impossible.
Not all assignments necessarily include a due date, as this field is optional. If there is no due date, refer to the availability dates and times [2] to find out when you can submit the assignment.
Important!
The value for seconds is set to 0 by default, unless the value for minutes is set to 59, in which case the seconds will be set to 59.
This means that if you see a due date or closing date of, for example, 4:30 p.m., the system understands this as 4:30:00 p.m. and will consider the submission late from 4:30:01 p.m. onwards. However, if the submission is set for 4:59 p.m., the system understands this as 4:59:59 p.m. and will consider the submission late from 5:00 p.m. onwards.
In the example above, you should understand that the assessment is available until September 18 at 06:00:00 p.m., and that there is no grace period allowed (the deadline date and time is identical to the availability date and time), so at 06:00:01 p.m., it would no longer be possible to submit.
This means that you would have until 6:00 p.m. to submit without being marked late, but you would have the option to submit until 6:05 p.m. before the evaluation closes. Any submission between 6:00:01 p.m. and 6:05:00 p.m. would be considered late and at 6:05:01 p.m. it would no longer be possible to submit.
Viewing assessment information
When you click on a quiz, here is an example of the information you should see:
Time limit [1] indicates the duration of the timer, if it has been set. The timer starts when you click the Begin button [4]. The timer appears at the top of the question page and shows the time remaining for the quiz. It can be hidden by clicking on it if it bothers you. An alert box appears 30 seconds before the end, indicating that you have 30 seconds left to submit.
Due date [2]: This indicates the date by which the questionnaire is due, with no mention of late submissions.
Backtracking [3]: A specific message appears IF backtracking is disabled. In this case, you will not be able to return to previous questions.
If there is no mention of the number of possible submissions, it means that you only have one possible submission.
Begin button [4]: For the system, as soon as you click this button, it means that you are starting the quiz.
In this example, the quiz does not have a timer or a deadline. You can navigate between questions and you have 2 attempts.
Click on Begin to start the quiz and answer the first question.
Navigating between questions
When you use the Next button to move to another question, your answer is saved.
If the configuration allows you to navigate between questions, use the Next [1] and Previous [2] buttons in the quiz.
You can also use the Question Navigator on the left and pin the questions you want to set aside to answer later (see image above).
If the configuration prevents you from going back, a progress bar [1] shows you how far you have progressed in the quiz with the number of questions remaining (here, 2 questions answered out of a total of 3 questions). After answering, click Next [2].
Important!
Avoid using your browser's navigation buttons when answering questions.
File upload question
If a document (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) needs to be uploaded or submitted during the exam:
Once the document has been loaded onto the computer [1], save it on your computer (My Documents, desktop, etc.).
Save the document you are writing regularly.
If the type of file accepted is limited, the details will be clearly indicated.
Make sure that the file you are about to submit is the correct one and that it is not corrupted or unreadable. Once uploaded to the quiz [2], it is no longer possible to check it [3]. You can delete it [4] and replace it with another file if you want to make sure you have submitted the correct one before submitting this question [5].
Essay-type question (open-ended)
If you are asked to provide a long answer, it is best to work in a Word document and then copy and paste your answer into the questionnaire text box. Otherwise, if there is a brief network outage before you have had a chance to save, you may lose the beginning of your answer.
Submission and automatic saving
All tests are automatically submitted at the due date and time or after the timer has expired. Similarly, all answers are automatically saved after each page change. Upon automatic submission, answered questions are saved and graded, while unanswered questions will receive a score of 0.
Thirty seconds before the deadline, a message like this appears at the top of the window:
And during an automatic submission, the following message appear
For timed tests, the timer continues and the test is automatically submitted even if you log out of ZoneCours.
If you start a timed quiz before the quiz closes and there is less time remaining than the time allocated to the timer, your timer time will be reduced. For example, let's say you have 50 minutes to complete the quiz, which is available until 3:00 p.m. If you log in at 2:30 p.m., your timer will automatically be adjusted and reduced by 20 minutes, as you will only have 30 minutes left to complete the exam.
If you get disconnected, you can return to the quiz without losing the answers you have already given. Click Resume. If you can navigate between questions, you can easily find the next question to answer using the progress bar on the left side of the screen.
To submit at the end of a quiz, click Submit. If you unanswered certain questions, an alert message will notify you.
After submission, a confirmation message will appear.
Important!
After submitting your quiz, it is normal not to receive a notification email.
After the exam
You can always check the date and time of your quiz submission by going to Grades, where the Submitted column shows the date and time of submission of the assessments.
For students with accommodations
The process is exactly the same as for other students. Your assessment will be available at the scheduled time, and you must submit your work according to the schedule. Accommodations will be taken into account on a case-by-case basis.
